In my experience, most web designers these days don’t even know how to include search engine optimization in the sites that they design and build. There is ample proof of this; it is visible easily every day by just taking a look at what is out there. Websites that have either no or empty Meta tags no headline tags and in some cases no title tags! The most frustrating part of this is that all of these measures are very easy to include.

So where does that leave the buyer? It leaves them with a website that will no doubt look fantastic; however the chances are that few will ever see it. Let alone become customers of whatever service or product the site is offering. This seems to be particularly true in the case of websites that contain a lot of flash, it looks great, but it is heavy in the browser and as it is purely images, the search engines cannot read it, even if there are words as the words themselves are rendered as images not text.

Therefore, when shopping for a website designer, be aware that though most will have the words ‘SEO’ or ‘search engine optimisation‘ somewhere within their marketing or sales material. These things are very easy to check. The title tag is easily visible to you as you open the site in your browser, you will see it on the very top of your screen. To double check the other items you will need to view the source code, you can do this in Firefox by clicking on ‘View’ then on ‘Page Source’. This will show you all the code of the site, the meta tags should be near the top just after the the title tags.

Lastly, check to see if the site has headline tags. Between these tags you should see the main headline of the page, this should include the keywords that you want people to find your website with.

The first thing you need to do is brainstorm. Type in a word doc a list of keywords and keyword phrases. Go ahead and come up with as large of a list as you are able, but for this demonstration, I am going to use a short list for one of my sites that talks about how to create a blog.

Now we will use an excellent tool to explore how to choose good keywords. This is a free tool that is wonderful and part of Google Adwords. It is the keyword tool, if you have not used it, you should go check it out now. Search for “Google keyword tool” if you are not signed up for Adwords. If you do use Adwords, you can click on “tools” under campaign management, then choose “keyword tool”. It is a great tool, and it is free.

Take your keyword list and paste it in the box marked “get keyword ideas”. For this example, I used free internet marketing. It may not be directly related, but it will be a good example to look at for our purposes. The tool will take a few seconds while it is thinking, then spit out a list for you, potentially large. This list may look something like this (but much larger depending on how many keywords you use):

• internet marketing services
• internet marketing strategy
• internet marketing advertising
• internet marketing analysis
• internet marketing company
• internet marketing definition

The perfect thing about this tool is that it lets you to see the volume a keyword phrase is searched for on Google. Also, it shows you by a bar graph, how much competition there is for that individual term. You’ll probably find that all the items you’re after are listed in a single category. Make sure to add this category to your browser’s Favorites, and keep coming back.

Look for Mistakes.

If you’re collecting something, the chances are you now a lot about the item, which is a good chance to make a mint from a seller’s mistake. Some of them do not realise that they have a rare version of that item or they might have left off the key information that makes the item valuable. If you’re willing to email the seller and ask them a few questions about the item to confirm that it is what you think it is, then you should be able to buy items like these. Don’t Always Believe Descriptions.

Don’t assume that an item is ‘rare’ just because you haven’t heard of it. Far too many sellers just put ‘rare’ into all of their descriptions – the chances are that the item is common and has just been described wrongly. Don’t bid unless you know what you’re buying.

Stalk Other Users.

Don’t Get Too Attached to an Auction.

They are millions and millions of items being listed every day on eBay – whatever you want, it’ll come back again and if you didn’t get it there are plenty more things to check and buy. This is similar to the golden rule of negotiating: always be prepared to walk away. If you can’t walk away, then expect yourself to pay over the odds. There are few things so rare that another seller won’t have one to sell. It is better to go and bid in a lower-priced auction, instead of getting into a bidding war in one which is already so cheap.

Beware of the Postage.

If you collect lots of small things with relatively low value, most likely, you’ll end up paying as much for postage as you do for each item. Remember to take these costs into consideration when you decide to make your bid. Another good strategy is to always buy a few things at once from the same buyer, as they will almost always offer you a discount on the postage.
